Our Maleta Journey: Arts & Culture as a Tool For Social Change

Sunday, November 20, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

| Free

One of the first exhibitions at Beit Zatoun returns to say goodbye

In October 2010, the first ever Filipino Canadian community based art exhibit in Toronto was held at Beit Zatoun and ran for three weeks. Led by the Philippine Women Centre of Ontario, “Maleta Stories” was a historic exhibit that presented the stories of migration, and the struggles and resistance of a transnational working class community in exposing exploitation under labour program¬† policies in Canada and the Philippines.

In the process of building a movement for radical social changes, progressive Filipino Canadians incorporate community-based arts and culture in their programs that help transform individual and collective subjectivities.  They look critically at their history and experiences in Canada and translate them into art and cultural forms that empower and hopefully, push more people in community and social activism.
