Palestinian Voices with Robert Massoud

Saturday, November 12, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

| $5

Robert Massoud, founder of Zatoun and Beit Zatoun

As Beit Zatoun winds down to its final weeks, it is good time to hear from its founder, Robert Massoud, about its genesis and the odyssey over a period of 7 years and 1000 events across a diverse range of topics and communities.

Palestinian Voices at Beit Zatoun has been programmed a series of talks by guests who self-identity as Palestinian. They may be born in Palestine, or Israel or in the diaspora. They may speak Arabic or not. It is a space, a platform meant to give voice where many Palestinians may feel they have neither.

The focus is on the “real life” experience of the speaker as a hyphenated Palestinian.

How has being a Palestinian marked their life? for good or bad?
How has it contributed to who they are and how they relate to society or their larger
community?
How has it attached them or not to their heritage?
What is their aspiration, hopes for the future? Personal and for Palestine?

The evening is meant to be personal, autobiographical, experiential. Palestinian Voices at Beit Zatoun is a vehicle to reach people with a story they would otherwise not encounter given the general context or portrayal of Palestinians in Canadian media and society and provide some insight into Palestinian reality through an individual life.

About the Speaker
Robert Massoud is a Palestinian-Canadian. In 2004, he founded Zatoun, Fair Trade extra virgin olive oil from Palestine to serve as a symbol of light, hope and peace. The oil is available in North America mostly through the grassroots and fair trade network.

Robert also founded Beit Zatoun (House of Olive) which opened in January 2010 as a culture centre, art gallery and community meeting space in downtown Toronto to promote the interplay of art, culture and politics and to explore issues of justice and human rights – local and global. Robert founded a worldwide project called “Trees for Life Palestine” which plants 10,000s of olive trees every year in Palestine. Zatoun is a major supporter of “Project Hope” providing “art as therapy” to help heal many thousands of children living in refugee camps in Palestine.

Robert is invited to speak to a wide range of audiences including faith groups, activist networks and student bodies with a unique message of creative participation and nonviolent resistance engaging North Americans to learn and be in solidarity with Palestinians and their struggle for a just peace for Israel-Palestine.
