Open Stage of Poetry and Music

Doors open: 6:15 pm ; Sign-up for the open mic: 6:30 pm; Start: 7 pm

The most diverse poetry reading and open mic in Toronto.  At Shab-e She’r (Poetry Night) we don’t just wait for diversity to happen: we actively invite it.

Featured poets: Liz Howard & Ali Ibrahimi
Host: Bänoo Zan

LIZ HOWARD’s Infinite Citizen of the Shaking Tent won the 2016 Griffin Poetry Prize, the first time the prize has been awarded to a debut collection. It was also a finalist for the 2015 Governor General’s Award for Poetry. Born and raised in northern Ontario, Howard received an Honours Bachelor of Science with High Distinction from the University of Toronto, and an MFA in Creative Writing through the University of Guelph. She now lives in Toronto.

ALI IBRAHIMI uses poetry as a medium of resistance.  Born in Afghanistan, he was forced to flee the Soviet occupation and the experience informs his view of power, conflict and capital expressed in his writing.  He has organized antiwar events across the city and is involved in poetry initiatives including the Art Bar revival and Change Artists – a startup online poetry magazine dedicated to resistance poetry. Ali holds a Master of Biotechnology from the U of T, works in the pharmaceutical industry and resides in Brampton.

Please spread the word through social media and any other way you know. Let our event become as diverse as we are.
