Town Hall: Green Party votes to support BDS

A town hall meeting at Beit Zatoun

NOTE: This is not a Green Party of Canada event, nor is it endorsed by the Green Party.  However, the event is about a policy resolution of the Green Party and organized by individuals and groups as a public forum for education and action.

At its August biennial meeting, the Green Party of Canada became the only party with representation in Parliament to adopt a policy resolution expressing support for BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) as a legitimate, non-violent means to pressure Israel to fulfill its obligation under international law and human rights in Israel towards Palestinians.

On three separate occasions this year, Green Party members voted strongly in favour of BDS. The resolution can be viewed here. The resolution was submitted by the justice critic in the shadow cabinet of the Green Party, Dimitri Lascaris, and was eloquently supported by, among others, Lisa Barrett, international affairs critic of the Green Party of Canada.

The Green Party has come under intense attack from many quarters for its adoption of the BDS resolution. Members of the party who support the BDS resolution would like to educate and engage the public about BDS, its goals and rationale. Mr. Lascaris is a board member and correspondent for the Real News Network and has previously spoken at Beit Zatoun in regard to the austerity crisis in Greece.  He will host the BDS town hall. Other former candidates of the Green Party are expected to participate.
